Blog Post: The Art of Smart Staffing / Why It’s Import to Hire for a Good Fit
posted Thursday, June 28, 2007 4:41 PM
Companies today are encouraging and empowering their employees to make decisions and act as if they were caring for their own company. With this entrepreneurial expectation, you need to be cognizant of what your corporate culture really is and make smart hires.
As an employer, you should seek out candidates who come to your organization with solutions. This can be demonstrated in the interviewing process itself. Ask open-ended questions, give the candidate a business problem and ask them how they would handle it. Observe the candidate’s decision making process as much as possible. Thoroughly screen your applicants. Statistics show that 30 to 45 percent of all resumes contain false or misleading information, do references and background checks. Learn to read body language in an interview, and learn to read between the lines. Personality assessment instruments can also be extremely valuable in helping you decide whether there is good fit or if values and philosophies are so different that the probability of long term success is in question. After all, a bad hire costs time, money and energy. Hire wisely. You want someone who brings more to the table than just “a warm body.” Focus on selecting the candidate who possess the right skills, demonstrates an attitude that is a good fit with your corporate culture; and brings solutions to the table.
