Blog Post: Do you have a professional credential.....is it active or inactive?

posted Friday, June 29, 2007 7:38 AM

Over the last week or so, I have heard multiple stories from recruiters regarding active vs. inactive professional credentials (or licenses).

For example, let's say you are a certified public accountant or have a certificate (license) that requires continuing education and you have elected to place that certificate on an "inactive" status. I recommend that you document this on your resume. Chances are when the company conducts a background check; they will discover that you do not hold an active license. As such, you most likely be disqualified from obtaining a job with that company, simply because you did not accurately disclose the status of your credential / license on your resume.

Have a great weekend!

I have to agree with Jared. Honesty is the best policy on your resume regarding certifications/licenses (and everything else!). If information regarding your license/certification is less than accurate, it sends a negative message to a possible employer. Don't put yourself out of the running for a good job...be up front about your certification status.
