Characteristics of Position:

This isa graduate or undergraduate student practicum, internship, or field placementin a clinical position in a human services agency providing alcohol, drugabuse, mental health or juvenile justice services. Counselor Interns provide assessment for mentalhealth and substance use issues, basic integrated and supportive individual,family and group counseling, education, advocacy, linkage, coordination,problem-solving and monitoring to optimize the functioning of individuals withsubstance disorders or co-occurring substance and mental disorders, workingunder supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee.

Understanding Behavior - Understands applicabletheories of addiction and human behavior; recognizes the risk and resiliencycomponents of the personal, environmental, social and cultural contexts;co-occurring competent; analyzes and distinguishes between the contributing interactionsof physical, social, behavioral, psychological and social factors.

Treatment Knowledge - Versed in science based treatmentphilosophy, models and practice; incorporates the use of other disciplines,family, social networks and community resources in support of individualrecovery; utilizes outcome measures in evaluating performance.

Application to Practice - Effectively matches client needs toappropriate levels and modalities of care; individualizes strategies andinterventions to individual client recovery needs, preferences, readiness,stage of change and unique co-occurring disorder, language, gender and culturalconsiderations; makes optimum therapeutic use of client crises; incorporatesand utilizes pharmaceutic interventions as appropriate; adheres to the fidelityof selected practice models.

ProfessionalReadiness - Understands and respects diversecultures and cultural differences; comfortable with and responds to personswith disabilities; evidences personal awareness of strengths, limitations andbiases; behaves ethically and adheres to professional standards ofconduct; pursues guidance andsupervision and continuous professional development opportunities; remainsaware of personal and professional limits in knowledge and expertise.

TechnicalCapabilities - Proficient in the use of Electronic Health Records; effectively utilizeselectronic medium (internet, intranet, phones, etc.) to communicate and stayabreast of changes in the field and political and community environments;thoroughly documents and records professional events, activities andtransactions.

BusinessAcumen - Knowledgeable of support and benefits available to clientsand aggressively works to enable client access to those resources; proficientin the matching and billing of services provided to appropriate fund sourcesand maintaining audit compliant backup documentation; consistently meets orexceeds established case load size and productivity standards.

Professional- Behaves ethically; presents a professional image in appearance,communications and demeanor; adheres to agency scheduling policy; followsprogram activity schedules; committed to personal professional development.

Analytical- Establishes a helping relationship with the person receiving services bydemonstrating empathy, respect, and genuineness in order to build trust; assistsin gathering information about basic and community living of the personreceiving services to be used in the assessment process.

Leadership - Seeks to participate in effective approaches and training to enhance jobskills; seek opportunities to mentor new staff; ability to recognize unsafebehaviors, situations, and environments to maintain the safety and well-beingof persons receiving services, staff and community members.

Pre-requisiteRequirements:

Currentlyenrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program in social work,counseling, psychology or other human services field and working under a formallearning contract or similar agreement with a university.

Quality of WorkExpected: Level commensurate withsatisfactory Counselor intern performance

Quantity of Work Expected: Commensurate with level necessary tofully meet obligations of learning contract or similar document,

Supervision: Work is performedunder the direction of the assigned field instructor. This position does notprovide supervision to others.

Scope ofResponsibility: Undersupervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, conducts interviewsto assess social, legal, medical psychological and educational needs of client;provides individual, group, or family counseling; provides casework services toassist clients in obtaining social, educational and vocational goals. Engagesclients to talk and communicates empathically about their addiction or mentalillness, medications and recovery.

Core Responsibilities/EssentialFunctions:

Workingunder supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, interns:

Completeadmission and orientation documentation; may administer or interpretscreening/assessment instruments.

Developtreatment or service plans, which include services to accomplish.

Provideindividual, group, and/or family counseling

Makereferrals to community resources, including social, legal and educationalproviders.

Attendscheduled interdisciplinary treatment team meeting or clinical supervisorysessions and discusses aspects of client?s care and progress (or lack of same);may participate in other meetings/events as assigned.

Reportcrisis situations and treatment needs of clients to clinical personnel andsupervisor; recognize client?s comprehensive needs and discusses with interdisciplinarytreatment team.
