Under routine supervision perform entry-level service work caring for impounded animals. This includes feeding and observing the condition of animals held in the Animal Care Center, maintaining sanitary conditions at the Center and providing assistance to the public on animal related matters.
 Position Duties:
The tasks below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Checks animals brought to the Animal Care Center for registration and inoculation.
  • Records details of animal history, such as, weight, food intake and license number.
  • Feeds and provides water to animals according to schedules. Cleans and disinfects cages, pens and yards in the Animal Care Center.
  • Observes animals for signs of illness and reports findings to supervisor.
  • Assists in euthanasia of animals as required.
  • May perform manual custodial and housekeeping tasks and preventative maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience working with the public or in a kennel / shelter.
  • Requires Valid Florida Class Driver's License (must be maintained for duration of employment).
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically control highly active/aggressive animals, potentially weighing in excess of 80 pounds, using available equipment. Ability to walk, stand, bend, stretch, kneel, stoop, reach and climb frequently.
  • This position requires successful completion of the Sheriff's office pre-employment medical certification.

 Additional Information:
  • May require working varying shifts between the hours of 7:00am - 8:00pm any day of the week.
  • In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area the employee will be expected to work.


This position is located at the South Animal Care Center: 5100 West Eau Gallie Blvd. Melbourne.

Employees may have contact with inmate trustees.

Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
