Overall Job Objective

Job Title:Lifeguard

Location: City of Casselberry, Florida
The Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the health and safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies at the aquatic facility for the City of Casselberry.  In addition, this position provides customer service and maintains the facilities.  The Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor performs routine work well covered by existing policies, policies, procedures or instruction and supervision is readily available.
 Examples of Essential Functions:
  1. Performs health and safety function at aquatic facility for patrons. (95%)
    1. Inspects the aquatic facility on a daily basis for cleanliness; completes general pool cleaning and maintenance duties.  Eliminates and/or reports any hazardous conditions or unsafe equipment.
    2. Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents.
    3. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations.
    4. Recognizes and responds to emergencies.
    5. Observes and enforces all aquatic policies, rules and regulations, preventing injuries and ensuring the safety of the patrons.
    6. Administers first aid if required.
    7. Instructs patrons registered for swim lessons and keeps appropriate records of classes.
    8. Prepares and maintains all materials (lesson plans, equipment) used in assigned classes.
    9. Responds timely to customer requests and work orders.
    10. Adheres to laws, regulations and policies of the City and of the assigned department.  Follows instructions provided by supervisor, Department Director or their designee.
    11. Additional Duties and Responsibilities (5%)
      1. Performs all duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core values of the City, and consistent with City and Department policies.
      2. Follows safe working practices and has a working knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
      3. Completes the identified required or assigned training timely and applies acquired knowledge and/or skills.
      4. Participates in department meetings, staff meetings and other related activities.
      5. Maintains, preserves, retains and disposes of public records according to FS Chapter 119.
      6. Emergency Management Role
        1. Participates as a member of the City staff as required to take action in the event of an emergency.
        2. Acts in the assigned role to support the City in disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts as described in the City of Casselberry Emergency Management Plan, assigned by supervisor or designee.

         Typical Qualifications:

        To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 
        1. Education and Training:  A comparable combination of education and experience may be considered.
        2. Experience:  A minimum of up to one (1) year experience in some phase of aquatics is required.  American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid and CPR/AED Professional Rescuer certifications are required.
        3. Certificates, Licenses and/or Registrations Required:  Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license.  A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check will be made to determine acceptance of past driving record.
        4. Security Clearance: Florida Department of Law Enforcement background clearance.
        5.  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
        • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations affecting work.
        • Knowledge of departmental rules, policies and procedures.
        • Knowledge of principles and practices of general aquatic rules, policies and procedures.
        • Ability to perform rescue work, CPR and First Aid.
        • Ability to deal with stressful conditions in a calm and professional manner.
        • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
        • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
