Language Arts Teacher

Department:037 - LifeStream Academy - Eustis
Location:Eustis, FL

JOB SUMMARY: To deliver educational services in accordance with federal, state, district and Center regulations. To promote knowledge in a safe and nurturing environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Fulfill role as a teacher of an educational program. Ability to function as a member of a team. Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with families.

Development and implementation of individual education plans (IEP), as required by regulatory guidelines. Complete all programs and activities necessary to become and stay certified according to State of Florida DOE regulations, including the Professional Orientation Program or equivalent. Maintain and follow an annual school calendar, which will simulate the LCSB calendar. Maintain all records and reports and provide such reports to LCSB, supervisor or required by law (i.e. attendance, lesson plans, grades, testing, etc.). Supervise bus transportation, physical education classes, vocational programs, as directed by supervisor.

Ability to prepare and maintain moderately complex records and reports.

*This position requires successful completion of physical restraint and verbal de-escalation training.


1)     Work with Center administration, site administration and clinical supervisor in coordination of counseling services for students.

2)     Share responsibility for disciplinary actions with program staff and report the action taken.

3)     Attend all team meetings, staff meetings, and staffing for those children assigned to the class.

4)     Provide specific classroom management as required.

5)     Work as an integral part of the team to provide academic assessment and educational recommendations, on an on-going basis.

6)     Communicate with school officials and other agencies when necessary to meet the client’s needs.

7)     Utilize disciplinary procedures, which are in compliance with Center policies and all state and federal regulations regarding discipline.

8)     Write and speak in a logical and understandable style, using appropriate grammar and sentence structure, and demonstrate a command of standard English, enunciation, clarity of oral directions, and pace and precision in speaking.

9)     Read, comprehend, and interpret professional and other written material.

10)  Recognize signs of students’ difficulty with the reading and computational process and apply appropriate measures to improve students’ reading and computational performance.

11)  Recognize patterns of physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development in students, including exceptional students in the regular classroom.

12)  Recognize and demonstrate awareness of the educational needs of students who have limited proficiency in English and employ appropriate teaching strategies.

13)  Use and integrate appropriate technology in teaching and learning processes and in managing, evaluating, and improving instruction.

14)  Use assessment and other diagnostic strategies to assist the continuous development and acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the learner.

15)  Use teaching and learning strategies that include consideration of each student’s learning styles, needs, and background.

16)  Demonstrate the ability to maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with students’ families to increase student achievement.

17)  Recognize signs of tendency toward violence and severe emotional distress in students and apply techniques of crisis intervention.

18)  Recognize signs of alcohol and drug abuse in students and know how to appropriately work with such students and seek assistance designed to prevent future use.

19)  Recognize the physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse and neglect and know rights and responsibilities regarding reporting.

20)  Demonstrate the ability to maintain a positive environment in the classroom while achieving order and discipline.

21)  Demonstrate the ability to grade student performance effectively.

22)  Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the value of, and strategies for, promoting parental involvement in education.

KNOWLEDGE AND JOB SKILLS: Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Computer literate. Must possess initiative, dependability and accuracy skills. Must meet federal and state requirements regarding criminal records and abuse registry screenings; and be screened by the Lake County School Board personnel department. Knowledge of company and school district policies and procedures.

JUDGMENT: Common sense and good educational judgment are important to job performance.  


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, the academic discipline being delivered or related field; supplemented by a demonstrated aptitude for working with children; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain current Teaching Certification, and all necessary academic certifications for the discipline being delivered or currently working toward state requirements for teacher certification.  

Experience: Two years experience in working with specials needs children preferred. Experience with children having emotional disorders preferred.

Personal Qualities: Patience and high tolerance for frustration is essential. Initiative, dependability and accuracy are important. The ability to analyze situations and mange them in a proactive manner is helpful. Must be able to work with a minimum of direct supervision.

Special Factors: It is important for a person in this position to enjoy working with difficult children and act as a role model whenever possible.

Staff Development: Completes all administrative and competency requirements according to Individual Training Plan. Additional training mandated by Lake County School Board will be provided.
