These are technical and professional positions which perform work engaged in Planning and Zoning related functions for programs and/or projects within the Department.  Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, technical, planning and/or zoning assignments regarding
Comprehensive Plan, Rezones, Developments of Regional Impact, Neighborhood Planning, and regulating the requirements in the Land Development Code. Specific functions are listed below and represent normal progression from Planning & Zoning Technician I to Principal Planner.
 

Working Conditions
Indoor/outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications for Planner I
BA degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or field closely related to area of assignment. 

Minimum of 2 yrs. related professional planning experience or closely related field.

Minimum Qualifications for Planner II
BS degree from and accredited college or university in Planning, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or field closely related to area of assignment. 

A minimum of 4 yrs. related professional planning experience or closely related experience. 

Minimum Qualifications for Senior Planner

BA degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or field closely related to area of assignment.

Minimum 6 yrs. related professional planning experience or field closely related to area of assignment.

Minimum Qualification for Principal Planner
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Geography Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or field closely related to area of assignment. 

Minimum of 8 years related professional planning experience field closely related to area of assignment.

Demonstrated leadership experience in large and complex projects.

Masters degree may substitute for one year of required experience.Planning or field closely related to area of assignment experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis

All Levels:
Masters degree may substitute for one year of required experience.  Planning, or closely related experience can substitute for education on a year for year basis depending on the type of experience.  GIS Mapping experience is a plus. AICP Certification is a plus. Valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.

POSITION SPECIFIC:
Area of Assignment: Public Hearing/Development Review, Planning

Planner - Additional Requirements
1. Make effective public presentations in a professional manner.
2. Prepare and maintain concise, accurate records, reports and written communications.

Area of Assignment:  Environmental/Development Review, Planning.

  1. Ability to review land development applications for environmental compliance with the Manatee County Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
  2. Knowledge of one or more of the following areas wetlands, wildlife management, natural resources, ecology, environmental science, and/or urban forestry.   
  3. Provide support to Case Managers, staff, applicant and public throughout all aspects of environmental review.
  4. Ability to analyze, evaluate and prepare determinations related to environmental documents for complex development projects, in coordination with staff related to technical issues such as wetlands, shoreline, threatened and endangered species, tree preservation and landscaping.
