Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems is currently seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to support OmegA Programs, Launch Operations and Infrastructure team in our Cape Canaveral, Florida office.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer reports to Launch Operations and Infrastructure Chief for non-recurring development, recurring launch vehicle operations, processing and launch facilities and infrastructure. Based on specific objectives, perform analysis, design, or test of complex designs without detailed direction from more senior engineers. Perform analysis, design, or test of one or more complex design concepts and criteria to ascertain the engineering principles involved and with general direction, plan, prepare, and complete the design. Evaluate completed design with more senior engineers and other technical groups and make modifications necessary to achieve a design that satisfies requirements. Develop, coordinate, and conduct the test programs required to evaluate the design. May also oversee, with senior engineer oversight, component and subsystem supplier design, analysis, manufacture, and test. He/she works closely with multi-disciplinary staff engineers, design engineering firms, vendors and construction contractors to ensure proper execution of technical plans. The position requires frequent interaction with NASA, US Air Force and commercial payload customers, as well as direct communication with Northrop Grumman program management
•Job Knowledge/Technical Skills - Broad understanding and application of company mechanical engineering technical standards. Broad technical expertise and working knowledge of other related disciplines.
•Support Launch Vehicle and Payload integration and operations – customer coordination and planning, payload fairings, adapters, payload handling, propellant loading, encapsulation at Astrotech, KSC or CCAFS processing facility, lifting and transportation to VAB, mate to LV stack, and final mission system testing
•Plan, coordinate, and implement design and analysis activities. Requirements Derivation/ Test Development/ Integrated Product Teams (IPTs). With supervision, determine engineering tasks required for project planning and execution
•With supervision, analyze project requirements and develop detailed planning, conceptual designs
•Analysis and Design - Based on specific stated objectives, performs analysis, design, or test of one or more complex designs, components, or functional systems of company products
•Develop testing and operation plans and procedures, and lead systems testing and recurring operations of launch vehicle and ground systems
•Present Customer Mission and Program Reviews
•Support problem and failure investigations. Identify risks/mitigations and track to closure in Risk Tracker
•Applies mechanical engineering principles to adapt or improve upon heritage features from previous successful designs of a similar nature
•Participates in the creation of and manages changes to system level design or analytical models under direction and support of more experienced engineers
•Anticipates internal and external customer needs and finds innovative ways to provide for those needs
•Support Launch vehicle processing operations – flight hardware receipt & inspection, stage level build-up and testing, vehicle vertical stacking and LV integrated system testing
•Travel as needed: expectation of 10% – 20%
•US Citizenship required
•5 Years with Bachelors in Engineering; 3 Years with Masters
•Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret level security clearance.
•Candidate must have demonstrated ability to:
oPlan and execute complex, fast paced projects
oCommunicate technically complex topics and scenarios clearly and concisely
oBuild relationships necessary to function efficient teams
•Multidiscipline domain experience in design, test or operations.
•Experience in System Architecture, Design and Analysis, System Installation, Testing, Operation, Trouble-shooting and Engineer and direct experience in launch vehicle hardware and ground support equipment (MGSE).
•Direct operations experience in a diverse variety of launch vehicle systems and aerospace ground systems, including LV electrical, avionics or software systems, cryogenic stages and integrated system testing.
•Experience with solid rocket motors and liquid fuel stages is highly desired.
•Experience with payload and payload fairing processing is highly desired.
•Experience with producing Systems Engineering documentation (ICDs, Specs, UDS documentation, Requirements Verification Documents).
•Experience working with NASA, US Air Force and Range Safety technical experts and customers
